What is the use of 192.168.1 and so on? It looks like a series of number but it is being constantly used on the internet and in our systems. So it is better to understand some basics about these numbers. These are basically not simple numbers but IP addresses which denote the address and name of your computer to the outside world. Each of us have a name by which we are identified. Similarly, in computer parlance, IP addresses having unique number such as 191.168.1.1. are the names by which they are identified to the outside world. These IP addresses are also called as private IP addresses. The advantage of having private IP address is that the same IP address series can be used for a number of free dvd burning software computers anywhere across the world, as long as they are within the bandwidth 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.255.255. So it could happen that you could have many systems having the same IP address. Then how do people identify a particular computer. It is done with the help of other tools such as the country where the system is located, the city and the locality. However, these IP addresses have to be unique if they are proxy to be used as routable servers. In other words computer having the IP address as 192.168.1 can be used only as non routable servers. If they want to be converted as routable servers it has to be done through a special technique called Network Address Transaction or (NAT).
